Getting there
Most northern safaris start at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) near Arusha. Zanzibar (ZNZ) and Dar es Salaam (DAR) are also served by international flights. We meet you on arrival and handle every transfer.
Visas and entry
Most nationalities need a visa, which can be applied for online through Tanzania's official e-visa portal before travel. Requirements change, so always check official government sources before departure.
Health and vaccinations
- Speak to a travel health professional 6–8 weeks before your trip.
- Malaria is present in most safari areas — ask about antimalarials.
- A yellow fever certificate may be required if arriving from certain countries.
- Comprehensive travel insurance, including medical evacuation, is strongly recommended.
Money and tipping
The local currency is the Tanzanian shilling, but US dollars are widely accepted on safari (bring notes printed after 2009). Cards are accepted at most lodges, sometimes with a surcharge.
Tipping is customary. As a guide, many travellers tip their driver-guide around USD 20–30 per day per group, and use the lodge tip box for staff.
A typical safari day
| Time | Activity |
|---|---|
| 6:00 | Early coffee and morning game drive, when animals are most active |
| 9:00 – 10:00 | Breakfast at the lodge or a bush picnic |
| 12:00 – 15:00 | Lunch and rest during the midday heat |
| 15:30 – 18:30 | Afternoon game drive and sundowners |
| 19:30 | Dinner and stories around the campfire |
Safari etiquette
- Stay inside the vehicle unless your guide says it is safe.
- Keep your voice low near animals and never feed wildlife.
- Ask permission before photographing people.
- Dress modestly in towns and villages, especially in Zanzibar.
Is Tanzania safe?
Tanzania is one of Africa's most popular and welcoming safari destinations. Take the usual precautions in towns, keep valuables secure and follow your guide's advice in the parks. Check your government's current travel advice before you go.
