What are the Big Five?
The term comes from old hunting days and describes the five animals considered hardest to track on foot: lion, leopard, elephant, Cape buffalo and rhinoceros. Today they are the animals most visitors hope to photograph.
Best parks for each animal
| Animal | Best places | Tips |
|---|---|---|
| Lion | Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Ruaha | Often resting on kopjes or in the shade at midday |
| Leopard | Central Serengeti (Seronera), Tarangire | Scan sausage trees and acacias along rivers |
| Elephant | Tarangire, Ngorongoro, Nyerere | Tarangire's dry-season herds can number in the hundreds |
| Buffalo | Ngorongoro, Serengeti, Arusha NP | Common in grassland and swamps |
| Rhino | Ngorongoro Crater, northern Serengeti | Black rhino are rare — the crater offers the best chance |
The best combination
The Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater together give you an excellent chance of seeing all five. Adding Tarangire boosts elephant and leopard sightings. A minimum of five to seven days is ideal.
Beyond the Big Five
- Cheetahs on the Serengeti plains
- Wild dogs in Ruaha and Nyerere
